Element of Hope
Hope, an intrinsic aspect of human nature, is a potent cognitive process and emotion vital for existence itself. It ignites our optimism, empowering us to strive for progress and endure adversity. For many, the absence of hope is akin to a living hell, as succinctly expressed by the inscription at the entrance to Dante’s Hell: "Leave behind all hope, you who enter here.”
This series of artworks serves as a poignant reminder, employing form and colour to engage with facets of our being that nurture hope—whether through personal relationships or cognitive behaviours.
The swirling black textures surrounding each circle symbolise our deepest fears and emotions, persistently swirling to dim our inner light.
At the heart of these works, a geometric shape serves as a beacon of hope, breaking through destructive patterns of behaviour and negative emotions. To artist Gavin Johnson, the circle epitomises pure love: boundless, eternal, and multidirectional. It aptly embodies the essence of hope. The colours—gold, silver, and copper—precious metals revered throughout history, imbue the artwork with deeper symbolism.
Gold symbolises abundance across cultures, encouraging a mindset of plenty. It reminds us of our sufficiency and fosters liberation from self-limiting beliefs.
Together, these elements underscore the transformative power of hope, guiding us to embrace resilience, self-awareness, and meaningful relationships. They inspire us to forge ahead with strength and purpose, both for ourselves and for the collective good.
